The Black Bear Cookie Jar

$75.00

A seated black bear in high-gloss ceramic — the head lifts off as a lid, the body is the vessel. Paws forward, looking up, with the kind of expression that sits somewhere between dignified and charming. Deep glossy black glaze with warm brown highlights at the ears, nose, and face.

Bear cookie jars are among the most collectible forms in American ceramic novelty ware. This piece is consistent with production by Metlox, McCoy, or American Bisque — the major California and Ohio manufacturers who defined the category from the 1940s through the 1970s. The high-gloss black glaze and upward gaze read mid-century, likely 1950s–60s.

Use it as intended or don’t. On a shelf it reads as sculpture. In a kitchen it reads as the best thing in the room.
