The Marquetry Panels
Two framed marquetry panels depicting European architectural scenes, assembled entirely from thin wood veneers in graduated tones — no paint, no stain. The shading, depth, and detail are achieved through the grain and color variation of the wood itself.
The left panel shows a rural Italian or Spanish village: a stone tower, a tiled farmhouse, trees, a winding path rendered in warm amber and chestnut veneers. The right panel opens through a Romanesque arch onto a Gothic cloister — a church facade, pointed colonnades, a courtyard in cooler darker wood with lighter panels for sky and ground.
This pictorial marquetry tradition is centered in Sorrento, Italy, where artisans have practiced the craft since the 19th century. Mid-20th century production. Both panels are framed in dark wood with a thin inner border. The craftsmanship is exceptional — the kind of work that reads as a painting until you are close enough to see the grain.
Sold as a pair.
