The Rattan & Wood Canisters
Two turned wood lidded canisters in deep walnut-brown, different in size and form but clearly from the same hand. Both feature stacked lathe-turned banding around the body and a small carved ivory or bone finial on the lid.
The smaller piece is squat and barrel-bellied, sitting on bun feet with a woven rattan or cane band at the lower section — a second material that adds tactile contrast to the smooth turned wood above. The taller piece is more architectural: cylindrical, waisted, cleaner in its proportions. Together they read as a pair without trying to match.
The combination of turned wood, natural binding, and bone detail is characteristic of East African or Anglo-Indian craft production — Kenya, Tanzania, or Indian export work made for the British market, 1950s–70s.
Sold as a pair.
